Activist Art: Shadowed

Completed September 2010.
17"x14"; pen&ink on watercolor paper.
This piece fulfills two purposes. First, it is part of my continuing effort to deliberately portray people of color as a pushback against an overwhelmingly white-focused art education. Second, by showing a confident and happy woman with her hair covered, it is commentary on the shameful push in both Europe and North America to police women's appearance by criminalizing those who appear in public in traditional Islamic dress.
