This piece is inspired by the quote "Women hold up half the sky" by Mao Tse Tung, and the book and the book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Kristoff & WuDunn, an enthralling and valuable book. It is also part of my ongoing effort to deliberately depict women of color in places and roles where I would once have put a white woman without really thinking about it.
